Gaming monitors have experienced a revival in recent years. Gamers looking for high-speed gaming had to settle with 60Hz refresh rates and lower resolutions before Nvidia G-Sync, and AMD FreeSync introduced their Adaptive-Sync technology.
There have been upgrades to the technology from companies like Nvidia, AMD, and others. Monitors today operate at 144Hz or higher. How does Adaptive-Sync technology compare to the other gaming displays in this era?
Adaptive-Sync monitors sync with the rate at which each frame is rendered by the graphics card connected to the computer. Although the rate may change, it can still accomplish this. Games cause the edges at a different pace.
The amount of processing power that your graphics card has can affect this. A monitor can start drawing new frames with a set refresh rate before the current structure is complete.
Can resolve this issue with G-Sync for Nvidia-based GPUs and with FreeSync for AMD-based GPUs. In this way, the video card renders each frame entirely before sending the next, eliminating the tearing artifacts.

What is G-Sync?
Only Nvidia’s graphics cards support G-Sync, the company’s exclusive adaptive sync technology. The G-Sync Compatible alternative does not exist. FreeSync is similar to this concept as it allows variable refresh rates with slight input lag.
Additionally, G-Sync has an added benefit: it offers ultra-low motion blur (ULMB), which helps reduce motion blur when gaming. Having a high refresh rate minimizes the ghosting effects that may sometimes occur when games are run.
A premium version of G-Sync is also available, called G-Sync Ultimate. In the sense that HDR and other GSync features are supported, this product is similar to FreeSync Premium Pro.
Monitors with G-Sync technology have been extensively tested to ensure that they are compatible with Nvidia graphics cards.
Those who regularly purchase graphic cards from Nvidia should consider G-Sync monitors. FreeSync monitors compatible with Nvidia graphics cards and feature variable refresh rates to offer smoother and more responsive experiences were not extensively tested.
ULMB will not work on this monitor because it doesn’t support all G-Sync features. As a result of the proprietary processor used in G-Sync monitors, they are more expensive than FreeSync monitors.
What Is FreeSync?
FreeSync launched in 2015. The AMD adaptive Freesync standard is the same as G-Sync. Synchronization is provided between liquid-crystal displays and processors.
This method makes sure that the monitor’s frame rate keeps up with the content to reduce screen tearing or stuttering. With this technology, you can adjust the synchronization of your displays according to your needs.
You can use this technology with any monitor equipped with this input. FreeSync does not support legacy connections like VGA or DVI. The ‘free’ part of FreeSync comes from its open nature, which means that other manufacturers can integrate into their products without paying royalties to AMD.
G-Sync-equipped devices are usually more expensive than FreeSync-equipped devices. AMD developed the FreeSync standard, and most modern graphics processing units support it. Several other electronics manufacturers support the FreeSync protocol.
Using FreeSync on NVIDIA hardware is also possible with the proper knowledge. V-Sync isn’t replaced by FreeSync, despite its improvements. One of the main drawbacks of FreeSync is ghosting.
It refers to the phenomenon of objects leaving behind some of their original image position, creating the illusion of shadows. FreeSync ghosting is primarily due to inefficient power management.
When pixels do not receive enough power, images may appear to have gaps. Slow movement causes this. In some cases, ghosting is caused by the overuse of power.
The G-Sync technology is more mature and has been around longer. In comparison to its competitors, G-Sync offers the following advantages:
- G-Sync has a significantly better performance at lower refresh rates despite being very similar at higher frame rates. With FreeSync monitors, frame stutter is a problem.
- G-Sync can only be used with NVIDIA cards, and NVIDIA has a significant market share. This means that a GSync monitor will work better with your computer and gaming system.
- Hardware requirements – The display module makes G-Sync more power efficient at the PC level. Despite this difference, NVIDIA graphics cards that deliver lower adaptive refresh performance will perform and AMD graphics cards.
Unlike other models, FreeSync has the advantage of being compatible with many more displays than its competitors. FreeSync monitors are available at all price points, while G-Sync monitors are typically reserved for high-end gaming monitors.
G-Sync Vs FreeSync
Nvidia’s G-Sync and AMD’s FreeSync are the leading technologies on the market for smooth images.
Both are intended to provide a tearing-free effect.
However, FreeSync monitors can be found on the market and offer more options. FreeSync’s quality standards may not be the best. However, Nvidia’s GSync is more mature and more reliable than AMD’s FreeSync. G-Sync monitors are more expensive, which is a problem.
Which is best?
A FreeSync monitor offers a lesser gaming experience compared to a G-Sync monitor. There is no guarantee that a FreeSync monitor will sync as smoothly as it can. Some websites have too narrow of a refresh rate range.
While G-Sync is not perfect, it is dependable and consistent. There’s a lot of money involved with G-Sync. G-Sync is a challenging product to sell, even when it’s at its best.
You only have to pay more for a larger size. To determine the range of FreeSync on different monitors may be an inconvenience, but it is well worth the effort.
You can only choose G-Sync Compatible if you have an AMD GPU, but you shouldn’t hesitate to select that option if you have an Nvidia GPU. Especially if your cameras are not twitchy enough to cause Ultra Low Motion Blur, adaptive sync is a great way to get it and saves you a lot in bandwidth costs.
This will be future-proof, as either Nvidia or AMD will work, and you won’t be left behind either. There are still plenty of G-Sync compatible monitors available, even though the number is not relatively high as 1309.
With G-Sync by Nvidia and Freestyle by AMD, you’ll be able to improve your game level. If we compare the features of the two monitors, I feel the G-Sync has a slight advantage, especially for products rated G-Sync Ultimate. It’s not that significant a difference, so freesync monitors aren’t necessary.
If you have a sound graphics card, purchasing a monitor that matches your GPU is a smart move. (side note: PS5 and Xbox Series X support FreeSync, while neither console offers G-Sync support).
If you remove any extra components, you can expect to spend no more than a few hundred dollars for a G-Sync Monitor. Budget picks are available for as little as $330.
There are many variations in the price of G-Sync cards due to product shortages. An affordable mid-range graphics card that delivers outstanding performance is coming soon with the RTX 3060. The trouble is, you’ll have a hard time finding them.
It may also be challenging to find other new generation cards, and if they are available, they are likely to cost at least $500.
Saving money by purchasing FreeSync monitors or a GPU with FreeSync support is an excellent option. About $200 is the price of an AMD Radeon RX590 graphics card, for instance.
It was, however, challenging to find graphics cards with the most power in the first half of 2021. You might be better off waiting until the price of an RX 6000 card drops rather than buying MSRP immediately.
